Flowers- Meaning

It is impossible for any person to be completely unaware of the flower meanings. As every flower lover knows, flowers have a language of their own. Every sentiment is expressed in one form or another by these delicate blooms. Of course, even the experts disagree on the ‘true meaning’ of many flowers and most have different meanings to different people. Everyone knows that red rose stands for romantic love and that one does not send yellow roses to anyone in mourning. However, meanings are not only associated with roses, but also with other flowers.

Flowers History

Flowers are among the loveliest objects on this earth. Among them rose is queen. Rose is estimated to be more than 30 million years old and has figures in the myths and legends, is the poetry and music. The rose has been used in rituals, as a motif in architectural decoration, in beautiful designs in pottery, jewellery and embroidery. There are about 120 species of roses distributed in North temperate and sub tropical parts of both the hemispheres. The flowers are an integral part of the Indian ecosystem and they are also an inseparable part of the Indian culture. The flowers are found in almost all parts of the country and even the people plant flower trees in gardens, in order to decorate themselves and to enhance the beauty of their residence. Flowers have a special place in Indian literature, just like world literature, the Indian literary personalities have also mentioned flowers in most of the notable creations. Ancient Indian literature is also full with names of a variety of flowers. Historical records prove that during the various periods in history, people of all ages have used flowers mainly for decorative purposes and also as a gesture of welcoming and wishing good luck.

Importance of Flowers

Flowers are an integral part of most of the occasions in our lives. They are conspicuously present on birthdays, graduation, funerals, weddings, etc. forming an integral part of our lives. Flowers always bring a smile to the person receiving them.  No one can ever go wrong with flowers as gift, irrespective of the reasons. Flowers are presented as a show of affection such as flowers for Valentine’s Day, flowers for mother’s day and flowers for anniversaries. For centuries, flowers have also played an important part in our physical and mental well-being too. Flowers have been used to stabilize our emotions through the use of essential oils, eliminate bad odors, potpourri and use as an alternative to caffeinated tea, uplift our spirit and can sometime bring us out of depression.

Uses of Flowers

Flowers can be used for giving presents. It conveys the love message on Valentine’s Day, mother’s day, father’s day, birthdays, wedding anniversary and special anniversary or simply to make him/her smile. Flowers can also be used for conveying the get well message for someone who is unwell, cheer up message for someone who is feeling down or depressed, apology message or a non verbal way of saying ‘I am sorry’, condolence message for someone who have just lost a loved one and as a congratulatory message for company’s opening ceremony, product launches, premiere, achievements like getting good grades for school examination, winning an award and weddings. Other than these, there are also a number of flowers used as medicinal plants, such as Porcupine Flower, Hophead, Kariyat, Blue Fox Tail, Bell Weed, Marsh Barbel, Gandarusa, Malabar Nut, Water Willow, Frilly Lepidagathis, Blue Pussyleaf, Karvy, Snake Jasmine, Singkrang, Himalaya Onion, Chives, Sage Leaved Alangium, Two-toothed Chaff Flower, Mountain Knot Grass, Marking Nut, Sugar Apple, Himalayan Hogweed, Indian Pennywort, Ajwain, Indrajao, Sea Mango, Nag Kuda, Water Jasmine, Sarpagandha and many others. These flowers are widely used in ayurveda in treating various types of ailments. The use of Indian flowers as medicinal plants has also been recognized globally.

Flowers and Astrology

The nuances of the language are now mostly forgotten, but red roses still imply passionate, romantic love and pink roses a lesser affection, white rose suggest virtue and chastity and yellow roses still stand for friendship or devotion. Also, commonly known meanings are sunflowers which can indicate either respect or haughtiness.
